ABOUT ME

My name is Sarah Jean and I am 21 years old. I was born in Manhattan, New York but my family is from Port-au-Prince, Haiti. We moved to America when I was just five years old, and as a result, I am fluent in both French and English.

I am a Senior at Old Dominion University with a major in Nursing and a minor in Health and Wellness, I will receive my Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing in May 2019.

I chose Old Dominion University, because the school has one of the best health sciences college in the state of Virginia, and it offers many post-graduate opportunities for its students.

Upon graduation, I hope to pursue my education and return to Old Dominion University and through the School of Nursing's BSN to DNP program, I will become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

Nursing has become my passion because everyone in my family has some connection to medicine. My father is an LPN, my mother is a CNA, and my sister is a Pharmacist. It was no doubt that I would pick the medical field as well.

As for my goal of becoming a CRNA, my fascination with anesthesia began when I read the novel, Dr. Mutter’s Marvels: A True Tale of Intrigue and Innovation at the Dawn of Modern Medicine by Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz. The novel depicted the history of surgery, and how the invention of anesthesia was a turning point for medicine. The role that anesthesia plays in medicine is truly remarkable. I have seen it first hand when shadowing a CRNA, and I would love to take on the responsibilities and expectations that the occupation expects.

I find that there is an art to medicine and it is because of my interest in medicine, the human body, and art that I have decided to pursue a health-related career.
